The cocker takes its name from the woodcock, the bird it was bred to flush out of thick cover, and the ears are the part every owner recognises first — set low, below the level of the eye, and carried in heavy silky feathering that swings when the dog moves. The English cocker has a longer muzzle and a less profuse coat than its American cousin, and this is the English one: domed skull, square muzzle, and the large dark eye that gives the breed its whole expression. The dog is turned slightly with the gaze level and the ground left entirely plain. Well suited to living rooms, hallways, kitchens and studies, and to country, traditional or neutral interiors.
