The flames are painted thickly, ridged and standing off the surface, while the dog is smoothed down almost to nothing — coat, shadow and rug running into one another. From a distance it reads as a warm glow with a dark shape lying across it; up close the rug turns out to be full of rust, indigo and cream that you don't notice at all at first.
