Bank the fire and let the dog sleep in front of it with this black labrador stretched out on a hearthrug, firelight running the length of his spine.
Most of this picture is dark, and that is the point. A low fire burns in a plain stone opening, throwing enough amber to catch the top of the dog's back, one ear and the side of his muzzle, and everything beyond that falls away into deep umber and near-black. He is flat out on a worn Persian rug with his chin on the floor and his eyes shut, taking up the whole width of the frame. Far behind, a single cool blue window sits against all that warmth and does more for the picture than anything else in it. The flames are painted thickly, ridged and standing off the surface, while the dog is smoothed down almost to nothing — coat, shadow and rug running into one another. From a distance it reads as a warm glow with a dark shape lying across it; up close the rug turns out to be full of rust, indigo and cream that you don't notice at all at first. Well suited to living rooms, snugs, studies and bedrooms, and to traditional, country or warm modern interiors.
Printed on premium 200 gsm semi-gloss paper, which is what keeps a black dog in low light from collapsing into a silhouette — the shoulder and flank stay readable as fur rather than shape — and holds the ridged paint in the flames bright rather than dulling it.
