The toy spaniel is named for Charles II, who was said to be so attached to his that he stood accused of neglecting affairs of state for them. The Cavalier is the longer-muzzled version, bred back in the 1920s from the dogs in seventeenth-century paintings, and this is the Blenheim — chestnut and white, named for Blenheim Palace, where the Marlborough family kept them. The ears are long and set high in heavy feathering, the muzzle tapers gently, and the large round dark eye does most of the breed's work. Turned a little away with the gaze level and plenty of plain ground around it. Well suited to bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and snugs, and to traditional, romantic or country interiors.
