Fair Isle is a real place — a three-mile island lying between Orkney and Shetland — and the knitting that carries its name is built from a small vocabulary of motifs repeated in horizontal bands, with each row worked in no more than two colours. This takes that grammar and sets it down flat and clean: stars, trees and zigzags stepping across the picture in oxblood, deep pine, ochre and undyed wool, with no shading and no shadow anywhere in it. Because it is drawn rather than photographed, the edges stay hard at any size, so an A1 holds every step of the pattern as crisply as an 8x12".
