Ferns are among the oldest plants still growing. They were here roughly two hundred million years before the first flower, and they never learned the trick — no blossom, no seed, just spores on the underside of the leaf. The Victorians lost their heads over them in the 1850s, a craze thorough enough to earn its own name, pteridomania, and to put fern motifs onto pottery, cast iron, glass and gravestones. This drawing takes one frond and gives it nothing to compete with: the pinnae are outlined rather than filled, each with its own midrib, and the lower third of the sheet is left entirely empty so the curve of the stem has somewhere to travel. Two colours, one line weight, no shading. Well suited to bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways and studies, and to Scandinavian, boho and modern farmhouse interiors.
