The golden was created deliberately in the 1860s, by crossing a yellow retriever with the now-extinct Tweed water spaniel to produce a dog that could work all day in cold water. The coat is the evidence: a dense, water-repellent double coat with heavy feathering at the neck and chest, which a head-and-shoulders portrait lets you see properly for once. The head is broad without being heavy, the ears sit above eye level and lie close, and the dark eye carries the expression the breed is loved for. The dog is turned a little away with the gaze level, the ground left plain behind it. Well suited to living rooms, hallways, kitchens and studies, and to traditional, country or warm neutral interiors.
