Gorse is the toughest flower on the British coast. It takes salt, wind and thin poor soil that nothing else will tolerate, which is why it fringes so many clifftops, and it flowers so nearly all year round that the old country saying runs "when gorse is out of blossom, kissing's out of fashion." Up close the flowers smell unmistakably of coconut. The picture is built on a single strong diagonal — the bush climbing from the bottom left corner and breaking against the sea in the upper right — with the blossom held in sharp focus and the water dissolving to soft bands of teal behind it. It is a simple two-colour idea: hot gold against cold blue, and nothing else competing. Well suited to bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms and living rooms, and to coastal, cottage and seaside interiors.
