Heather moorland is rarer than it looks. Britain holds a large share of what exists anywhere, and Scotland carries the greatest sweep of it — the moors above the glens turn from brown to purple for a few weeks each year and then go back again. The flowering that gives the habitat its name lasts only from about the middle of August into September. The picture is built in three bands: dense heather worked right up to the bottom edge, a wide moorland plateau running out to the middle distance, and a line of hills stacked in flattening blues behind. What holds it together is the low sun, which turns the moor grass copper and lets it thread through the purple rather than sit beside it. Well suited to bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and studies, and to country, highland and quietly traditional interiors.
