The composition works on two scales at once. From across the room it reads as one great sweeping curve, ivory and charcoal folding through each other with a single thread of burnt copper running the length of the turn. Close up it breaks into hundreds of fine striations, each ribbon combed through with its own grain, and the sphere at the top resolves into loops that pass behind and in front of it. The ground is left as aged paper — foxed, faintly creased, warm rather than white — which keeps the whole thing from feeling cold or clinical.
