The breed is named for the Reverend John Russell, a Devon parson who bred working fox terriers through the 1800s, and its colouring is functional rather than decorative — predominantly white so that hounds and handlers could tell the terrier from the fox, underground and in cover. This is the smooth-coated sort: tan laid over one eye and ear, a flat skull tapering to a strong muzzle, small V-shaped ears dropping forward, and the level, entirely unbothered expression anyone who has owned one will recognise. Turned slightly, gaze steady, ground left plain. Well suited to kitchens, hallways, living rooms and studies, and to country, farmhouse or traditional interiors.
