Almost all of this picture is empty beach. The birds are small and spread right across it, one to the left, one at the centre, one well over to the right, each with its own soft reflection in the wet sand beneath. A dark line of tide-wrack runs behind them and divides the picture; everything else is the palest grey, cream and shell-white, laid on in thick visible strokes with the canvas weave showing through. It is a very quiet painting — the sort that reads as texture and light from across a room and only resolves into birds when you come closer. Well suited to bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, landings and studies, and to coastal, Scandinavian or neutral interiors.
