The swell rises through the middle of the frame and breaks into white at the top, but nothing here is drawn or described — it is built out of paint and nothing else. Stand back and it is open water; stand close and it stops being water entirely and becomes marks, edges, the record of a knife moving across a surface. That double reading is the whole appeal of impasto work, and it rewards a wall you pass close to rather than one you only ever see from across a room.
