The painting works up from a bank of warm ochre grass and turning leaves at the base, through a dense tangle of dark thorny stems, and out into a grey mist that takes the top of the frame. Thick, loaded brushwork on the berries keeps them sitting proud of that mist, so the red reads as the only warm thing left in a cooling picture.
