Catch a Staffordshire bull terrier at his softest in this staffie with his head down on folded paws, eyes half closed and ears gone loose.
Almost every painting of this breed is doing something else — squared up, muscled, chin out, being a mascot. This one is asleep, or very nearly. The head rests forward on two crossed front paws, one ear folded and the other half up, and the eyes are down to slits with the last of the afternoon light catching the rim of one of them. The coat is short fawn over cream, and the light comes in low from one side so the muzzle and the shoulder pick up a soft sheen while the rest falls away into a plain muted ground. From across a room it reads as a warm, quiet shape with a dark nose at the centre; up close the edges are barely there at all, blended soft where the fur meets the blanket. Well suited to living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and studies, and to warm neutral, modern or traditional interiors.
Printed on premium 200 gsm semi-gloss paper, which holds the low sheen along the short coat where a matt paper would flatten it, and keeps the graduated ground behind him smooth rather than banded.
