This is a Scottish birch wood rather than a dark pine forest — silver-white trunks, a thin canopy of bare twigs, and the rust of last year's bracken lying flat underfoot. The nearest trees stand hard against the left of the frame, and the wood recedes behind them into pale grey haze until the far trunks are little more than lines. The stag is set well back and small inside that depth, so you find him rather than being shown him. That is what gives the picture its stillness: he is not posing, he has simply stopped, and the wood is as much the subject as he is. Well suited to hallways, bedrooms, studies and living rooms, and to country, Scandinavian or natural interiors.
