Puffers were the small steam coasters that kept the west coast supplied — stubby, shallow-draughted boats built to take the ground on a beach and unload wherever there was no pier, which is most of the Hebrides. This one is painted in the thick of it: black hull awash to the gunwale, derrick mast forward, wheelhouse aft, and one ochre funnel that is the only warm note anywhere in the picture. Everything else is grey-green swell laid on with a palette knife and a sky the same colour as the water. The whole thing turns on scale — a very small working boat against a very large sea, and no sense at all that it is losing. Well suited to studies, snugs, hallways and stairwells, and to traditional, maritime and dark modern interiors.
