The whippet was bred in the mill towns of northern England as a coursing and racing dog on a working man's budget — the poor man's greyhound, though nobody who owns one calls it that. The head is the giveaway: long and narrow with almost no stop, the skull flat between small rose ears that fold back against the neck at rest and only half-lift when something catches its attention. The skin is famously fine, so the brindle coat sits straight over muscle and bone with nothing to soften the line of the neck.
